Bachelor's degree is the primary stage of the Bologna higher education system, joined by Russia in 2003. Before that, universities taught speciality programmes. Acceptance of the Bologna system made it easier for international applicants to enter Russian universities.

Today, Russian education consists of three stages: bachelor's, master's and PhD studies. The exceptions are medical and some technical fields still using speciality programmes. You should definitely pay attention to this while choosing a suitable programme.

Bachelor and specialist studies

The two main differences between bachelor’s and specialist degrees are programme duration and academic opportunities after graduation.

Bachelor programmes are four years long and include both the study of fundamental disciplines and specialized subjects of the chosen filed. Besides, Russian universities adjust the education process of a bachelor's degree to fit subjects’ choice, building an individual educational trajectory. In their final year, students write their final qualifying work and defend it. A bachelor's degree allows you to continue your studies for a master’s but not a PhD.

Specialist programmes lead students toward more practice-oriented education in their chosen field. The programmes are from 5 to 6 years long. Based on the state exams results and a qualifying work defence, graduates are issued a specialist diploma. It gives the right to continue their studies in a magistracy or postgraduate study.
