Biological Institute

 The department of biology was established right after the university was opened for students in 1885. Currently the institute is one of the largest at the university. The institute provides academic programs in areas of agronomy, biology, soil sciences, ecology, forestry studies, and landscape architecture. Since the first year the students can carry put field practice in different Siberian regions. Biological Institute conducts research in different areas (e.g. its research team developed cheap way to clean sediment from oil, based on the method of flotation).

Also the researchers carry out studies in biotechnology, medicinal plants, optimization of reforestation in Western Siberia, cytogenetic studies, and etc. The institute collaborates with universities from Austria, Canada, the USA, China, France, Germany, and Austria. The graduates work in state authorities, educational and research organizations, and large Russian companies such as Gazprom, Rosneft, Rosatom, and others. 

Faculty of Chemistry

Faculty of Chemistry was founded back 1932. From that time till nowadays it provides students with knowledge in a wide range of academic fields: inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, solid state chemistry, petrochemistry, environmental chemistry, and others.

 With the very first days at the faculty, the students are involved in research projects and the most active can join laboratories’ research teams. Results of their study often become goods for large-scale industrial production. For example, students and PhD students at Faculty of Chemistry developed a technology for producing allantoin. This technology is planned to implement for industrial production in Russia.

The faculty is actively collaborating with national and international partners. One of these international partners is Institute of Transfusion Medicine and Immunology, University of Heidelberg, where the student can carry out internship.

The faculty projects are awarded at various exhibitions and conferences and the students receive grants and scholarships of large companies such as: Farmkontrakt and Kemerovo JSC Azot. 

Faculty of Foreign Languages

Faculty of Foreign Languages was founded at the university 84 years ago. It trains translators, interpreters, and language teachers.

The student can learn English, German, Chinese, French, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, and Portuguese languages. Professional teaching staff and native speakers, working at the faculty, allow training highly qualified specialists.

The faculty collaborates with international universities from: French, Brazilian, Spanish, English, Chinese and others. The students can participate in academic exchange with international university-partners.

The faculty conducts research in different areas e.g. it studies French literature of the past centuries, stored at TSU Research Library. Another major research project is study of bilinguals’ mental features. 

Faculty of Geology and Geography

One of the oldest faculties of Tomsk State University. TSU trains geologists, geographers, hydrologists, meteorologists, specialists in natural resources management, and geoecologists.

It is not easy to study at the Faculty, but it is interesting. Starting with the first year of studies, students of the Faculty complete summer work placements. For instance, students who study paleontology participate in diggings at the sites of mammoth and dinosaur fauna.

Students of TSU work in the Tomsk area as well as in the Republic of Khakassia, Altai Republic, in the Lake Baikal area, and other remote locations. Together with the staff of the Faculty, students study mineral resources: ore, non-metal, oil and gas deposits.

Many programmes taught at the Faculty are becoming more and more popular not just in Russia, but around the world. For example, interest of employers toward experts in hydrology is growing rapidly. Such professionals study formation patterns and predict water regimes of rivers, lakes, reservoirs, glaciers, and swamps.

Careers of students who graduated from the Department of Hydrology are connected with gathering, processing and analyzing of information on water resources; they work in the field of ecology, water bodies preservation and others. Just seven Russian universities train hydrologists.

Faculty of History and Political Studies

The Faculty of History was founded in 1917. In 2018, the Department of Political Studies joined the Faculty of History, and the Faculty received a new name "Faculty of History and Political Studies". Currently the faculty trains historians, specialists in records management, and specialists in international relations. After the first year the students can undergo ethnographical and archeological practical trainings. The students carry out excavation in the territory of Tomsk region and other Siberian regions (Omsk region, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug) and conduct anthropological studies in different countries.

Students of international relations often undergo their practical training in China, Taiwan, and Belgium. At the faculty they learn both European (English, French, and German) languages and Oriental (Chinese, Korean, and Japanese) languages. Also, the students have opportunities to participate in lectures of diplomats from different countries. The university’s Laboratory for Social and Anthropological Studies researches Siberia peoples and tries to find out a way how the modern world affects the traditional culture. One of the main research areas is history of Siberian identity development. 

Faculty of Informatics

The faculty was established in 1992. Students at this faculty are taught to develop and implement complex software system, and manage projects in IT sphere. The students obtain advanced knowledge in mathematics, fundamental computer sciences and economics that allow them to adapt easily to needs of individual manufacturers, either high-tech IT companies, bank, state authorities or any other organizations.

Even during training the students are able to use their knowledge in practice at the TSU small innovative enterprises or Tomsk companies. Up to date equipment and professional teaching staff are the main reasons why this faculty is so popular among international students. The faculty has one of the highest numbers of international candidates per place. In 2016 TSU hold the International Winter IT School which brought together participants from Brazil, Pakistan and Indonesia. The faculty graduates work at large international companies, such as: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, F5 Networks, CBS, and others.

The faculty is actively working with high school students. It established a school of programmers, which provides everybody with special courses and workshops. Many school graduates apply to study at TSU. 

Faculty of Innovative Technologies

The Faculty trains engineers with not just knowledge of high technologies, but with skills to create brand new products. The priority in the development of the Faculty is intelligent device engineering.

Scientists of the Faculty create new automatic medical complexes, laser and optical technologies, robotic systems and industrial electronics. They pass their experience and knowledge to students, who start their research and participate in constructing of new devices from the second or third year of their studies.
Among the latest creations of the Faculty is the first Russian digital X-ray tomographic scanner whose functional speed is considerably higher that of its analogs made in other countries.

Apart from this, researchers from our international laboratory for systems of computer vision developed a new geolocation technique that allows parents to always be aware of where their child is. The invention is special because gadgets used as tracking devices work independently from GPS or GLONASS, they are cheap and have battery life of several months.
Faculty of Journalism

This year is the 40th anniversary of the Faculty of Journalism. Here we train future media specialists who are able to work with huge amounts of information, to analyze it and to present it to different types of audience in various forms.

Studies include plenty of practical tasks. Active journalists teach them to write news, create stories, and do interviews. A fully equipped TV studio allows students to create their own shows and to work on their projects.

Here we have the only university department in Russia which creates digital issues for iPad. The "City birds" application created by students of the TSU Faculty of Journalism won "The Best of Digital Design" award in 2015, which is presented by the Society of News Design.

The Faculty is cooperating with the University of Hanover in the field of photojournalism. Groups of students from Germany and Russia create joint stories from different cities of the world. Students of the Faculty regularly present their photos at the Lumex festival (Germany).

Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics

In 2018 the Faculty will celebrate its 70th anniversary. For a long time it was the only centre of mathematical education in Siberia. Today researchers study new branches of mathematics, mechanics, computer security, and mathematical simulation here. 

Students perform research connected with prediction and prevention of disasters, designing of space hardware, monitoring of the environment, and financial mathematics. Also students have the opportunity to work with the SKIF Cyberia computer cluster, which is able to perform 100 trillion operations per second. 

The Faculty cooperates with universities of France, England, USA, Denmark, Japan, Italy: researchers work together, students complete internships and study PhD programmes. The Faculty and the University of Rouen, France offer a Master's double degree programme.

Faculty of Philology

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Faculty of Philology. Our students learn several languages, perform cognitive research in linguistics, study ways to write texts for different types of discourse, and learn publishing.

The TSU Faculty of Philology is known for its Russian language school. Twice a year language schools take place here. Students attend from different countries: China, Vietnam, Italy, Poland, Thailand, Czech Republic, the UK, Germany and other European and Asian countries.

Russian students, in return, have internships in archives and libraries of Italy, Greece; TSU has a joint "2+2" programme with Shenyang University (China): students from Russia and China study at home for 2 years and spend the following 2 years at the partner university.

The Faculty of Philology has a laboratory for cognitive language research, where researchers study how perception of the world around us is connected with the language. Another one of our priorities is the study of dialects of people from villages near the Ob River.

The TSU Faculty of Philology is a renowned centre of studies of Vasily Zhukovsky's work (famous Russian poet). For 25 years professors of our Faculty have been working on publishing his first ever complete works.

Faculty of Philosophy

The Faculty of Philosophy was established in TSU in 1987. We train future social scientists, political scientists, and philosophers.

The Faculty hosts discussion clubs, where students, teachers, and citizens discuss certain problems, films, or books. Training of social and political scientists is closely connected with practice: students participate in surveys for the local government, have internships in Russian government agencies, keep track of elections.

In 2002 a interdisciplinary Department of Social Problems in Informatics was established. The Department study how informatization affects today's society: psychology of personality changes, new worldview basics emerge. One of the priorities of the Department is the study of new approaches in secondary and higher education.

The Faculty of Philosophy has a vast network of international contacts. It closely cooperates with philosophy centres in Europe, USA, China. This cooperation comes in various shapes, from long-term internships for students, PhD-students and lecturers to joint research, academic literature publication, and organization of scientific conferences.

Faculty of Physical Education

In 2015 the Faculty celebrated its 10 year anniversary. The students here are active athletes many of whom won many competitions of all levels, even the Olympics. The Faculty trains qualified coaching staff, sports managers, and specialists in tourism. 

Students study issues if teaching, psychology, sports anatomy, sports nutrition, and even anti-doping control. We have a multifunction training centre: gyms, a stadium, a short-course swimming pool. 

In 2015 the Faculty launched a student exchange programme in tourism with Baltic International Academy, Latvia within the ERASMUS+ project. 

In 2014 a cognitive research laboratory of space exploration was opened at the premises the Faculty. Researchers create new technologies in preparing astronauts, exercise machines, and techniques that increase training efficiency. The Faculty cooperates with Sergei Krikalev, the head of Cosmonaut Training Centre. Opportunities for student internships in the Centre are under development.

Faculty of Physics

The Faculty was established in 1948. Students of the Faculty get all-round education in Physics, both fundamental and applied, which is why our alumni have no difficulties in finding jobs not only in science, but also in business, government agencies; they often become executives.

Students study in well-equipped facilities of the Faculty and institutes of Tomsk branch of SB RAS, where they complete work placements and work on their theses. These institutes have branches of our Departments to increase efficiency of studies.

Our approach to education is to let students take part in real research performed at the Faculty. This is why they often become authors and coauthors of papers.

Students and PhD-students regularly do internships and participate in conferences in different cities and countries, and our alumni live all around the world.

Every year a team of our students participates in the Open Regional Maths Contest in Novosibirsk, often winning first and other prizes.
Faculty of Psychology

The first academic programme in Psychology was launched at TSU in 1947. Currently the faculty is training psychologists, youth work specialists, HR and PR managers. Practical training and internships are integral part of curriculum at the faculty. The student can participate in research projects and carry out research in collaboration with Tomsk Research Institute of Mental Health. Also they can participate in projects of the Laboratory for Cognitive and Genetic Studies jointly with renowned national and international researchers. On the basis of the laboratory the faculty research team carries out longitudinal study of twins, under this studies one established the Russian School Twin Registry, that is the part of a large international project TEDS (The Twins Early Development Study). The faculty invites international specialists to give workshops and seminars. The departments collaborate with researchers from Germany, Bulgaria, Great Britain, the Netherlands and the United States. The Master’s programme Psychology of Safety and Health have passed the international accreditation. 

Institute of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

The Institute of Applied Mathematics and Computer Technologies (IIMS) was established in 2017 as part of the Faculty of Informatics and the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics of the TSU. In 1998, a Department for Information Protection and Cryptography was founded. Since 2009 until 2011 the department team SiBears have won all-Russian inter-universities competition for information protection RuCTF. In 2012 it participated in one of the most largest world competition DEF CON CTF (Las-Vegas, USA). 

The Institute trains specialists in mathematics and computer sciences, in mathematics and economic sciences, and specialists in computer security. The students obtain advanced knowledge in mathematics, fundamental computer sciences and economics that allow them to adapt easily to needs of individual manufacturers, either high-tech IT companies, bank, state authorities or any other organizations. Even during training the students are able to use their knowledge in practice at the TSU small innovative enterprises or Tomsk companies.

Many school graduates apply to study at TSU. 

 


Institute of Art and Culture

Institute of Arts and Culture was established at Tomsk State University in 1994. Currently the institute trains culture experts, conductors, musicians, singers, artists, designers, and museology specialists.

The pride of the university is a choir that is renown nationally and internationally. It is a laureate of many national and international competitions and events. Its soloists are teachers and students of the Institute of Arts and Culture and other university’s faculties.

The works of students from the institute’s department of fine arts are regularly exhibited at the city exhibition halls. Throughout a year the students move in the open air in other Russian regions, where they create their paintings.

For ten years TSU has held the Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition. Musicians from different countries and different ages participate in this competition, and its jury includes experts from educationla institutions of Poland, Israel, China and USA. 

Institute of Economics and Management

The first department of economics was opened at Tomsk State University in 1898. Nowadays economics programmes are one of the most popular among the candidates. The students are equipped with advanced knowledge in economic subjects due to general economic, industrial and pre-graduation practical trainings in banks, commercial and financial organizations, and Russian enterprises. The faculty research teams study regional development, history of Siberia, current political and socio-economic situation, positioning of a region in the context of global economy, and development of strategic decisions. This research allow finding out ways and methods for economic development of a region in Siberia and Russian Far East as a special macro-region in the geopolitical and geo-economic map of the world. 

Institute of Law

The TSU Faculty of Law was founded on October 22 1898 by Act of the Emperor Nicholas II, an in 1994 it became an Institute. It became the first faculty of law beyond the Urals and the ninth in the Russian Empire.

As of now, more than 2000 students of TSU study law, and lecturers combine efforts in research and practice.

On September 1 2016 the Institute will launch a Master's degree programme of training environmental lawyers. Such specialists are able to settle disputes in natural resource management: land, water, forest resources etc.

It has been five years since the Institute started hosting a criminal law tournament Criminal Process where teams from Krasnoyarsk, Omsk, Simferopol, Barnaul and other cities.

Institute of Military Education

History of the Institute started in 1926 as it was based on one of the oldest departments of military education in Russia. The Institute offers training of soldiers, sergeants, military interpreters, and secret-service agents in collaboration with the Faculty of Foreign Languages and the Faculty of Radiophysics. After graduation, students are appointed to serve in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

The Institute regularly hosts celebrations of such holidays as the Day of Army Inductees, open houses, and sports and military competitions, where participants are introduced to military radio equipment, weapons, military machinery, and means of protection from radiation and chemical and biological hazards.
