ITMO University is located in St Petersburg; it was founded in 1900. It currently provides training to some 13,000 students, including 17% of foreign nationals. The university offers ten double degree programmes.

ITMO University is a top Russian engineering university specialising in teaching information and photon technologies. Times Higher Education ranked it 74th for Computer Sciences; it is in the 76-100 group for Automation and Control in ARWU Rankings and in the 101-150 group for Computer Science and Information Systems in QS Rankings. Also, it placed 6th in Webometrics Rankings. ITMO University students frequently win medals at international IT competitions such as the ICPC International Collegiate Programming Contest.

It has partner universities in France, Germany, USA, Estonia, Cyprus, and, of course, Finland which is close to St Petersburg. All joint projects are master’s programmes; length of study is two years, tuition fee is 260,000 rubles a year or more. Many programmes are taught in English, applicants’ language proficiency has to be at upper intermediate or higher. Graduates get two master’s degrees, one from ITMO University and one from partner university. 

Following are the double degree programmes offered to international applicants: Business Information Systems (jointly with University of Rostock, Germany), Quantum Communications and Femtotechnologies (University of Rochester, USA), Industrial Ecology and Cleaner Production (Zittau/Goerlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG University), Bioengineering and Biotechnical Systems (New Mexico Highlands University, École normale supérieure Paris-Saclay, France), Light Guide Photonics and Programmable Electronics (Cyprus University of Technology), Motion Control Systems and Navigation (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), Robotics (Lappeenranta University of Technology, Tallinn University of Technology), Photonics Materials (University of Eastern Finland, University of Auvergne), Intelligent Technologies in Telecommunications (Lappeenranta University of Technology).

One of the most popular dual degree programmes is Computer System Information Security, implemented with Aalto University, Finland. It trains top quality professionals capable of ensuring information security, identifying low level security segments, detecting malware, building a reliable data transfer system etc. Curriculum includes cryptosystem modelling, information security risk management, engineering and technical maintenance, artificial intelligence, mathematical modelling etc. Aside from information security technicalities, students also explore the relation between Russian and international law.

You can choose one of six specialties, from information security analytics to cryptography and data security. To enrol in the programme, candidates have to hold a bachelor’s degree in the field-specific area and show excellent academic performance and English proficiency at B+. To be admitted to Aalto University, candidates might need to prove their language proficiency with IELTS or TOEFL certificates.

Tuition fee: 262,000 rubles for two semesters. Training venue, 1st year: Russia; 2nd year: Finland. The winter term exams are taken at Aalto University, thesis defence takes place at ITMO University in the presence of Finnish university teachers. Graduates are awarded a degree from ITMO University and Aalto University.
